KSU Department of Land Architecture and Regional Planning

KSU Partnership

Platte Land Trust developed a new partnership with Kansas State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning.

Professors Lee Skabelund and Howard Hahn used the Charlotte Sawyers Nature Area as a project site for three classes in 2018-19:

• Fall 2018 classes: Site Design Implementation and Planting Design Studio
• Spring 2019 class: Master Planning and Implementation

Twenty third-year students participated in the project assignments focused on turning CSNA into a nature sanctuary with park amenities such as trails, a nature center, and nature education areas.

Special thanks to Tim, Nancy, and Charles (Chuck) McDowell for helping to secure this wonderful opportunity and donating time to critique student projects. Chuck came back to KC in December 2018 to help critique the student’s designs at an open house on the KSU campus.

Platte Land Trust is using the student’s designs to start conversations about how to best use the Charlotte Sawyers Nature Area in the future.
